- Tourism is worth around £5 billion per year to the East of England's economy and employs 185,000 people. With 15 million staying visits, the East of England - Bedfordshire, Cambridgeshire, Essex, Hertfordshire, Norfolk and Suffolk - is fifth in the league of the nine English regions for staying visits. In percentage terms, Norfolk has a 24.5% share, followed by Cambridgeshire (22.2%), Essex (20.7%), Suffolk (14.1%), Hertfordshire (10.8%) and Bedfordshire (7.7%). Norfolk receives the highest volume and value of domestic visitors, with Cambridgeshire toping the table in terms of overseas visits and spend.
- 2005 saw overseas visitors spend £709 million, during 2,179,000 trips to the region. Residents from France and USA account for 11% of these visitors each; a further 10% of overseas visitors originate from Germany, with a further 7% coming from the Netherlands.
